For the past couple of years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Parents Association Board (PAB). As the only Christian and, at times, the only British person on the board, I’ve often felt that God has placed me there for a reason.
Over the last academic year, the board has been made up predominantly of Indian parents, with different cultural and religious backgrounds represented, including Gujarati, Muslim and Hindu families. The school itself is Muslim-run, with much of the senior management team also being Muslim. In that environment, I’ve felt increasingly that my role isn’t simply about being a parent or attending a monthly meeting. It’s an opportunity to serve.
I’ve tried to be available to other parents, to listen to their concerns, to share where I can, and to contribute positively to the conversations and decisions of the board. I want to be someone who is approachable, willing to listen, and ready to help where needed.
At the same time, I recognise that being the only Christian on the board allows me to represent Christ, not by forcing my beliefs on others, but through the way I serve, listen, speak and treat people. I want my presence to be a positive one and, in whatever small ways I can, to be a light within the community.
As I apply to continue serving on the PAB for the coming academic year, I genuinely feel that this is where God wants me to be. I don’t see it simply as a position or a responsibility. I see it as a place where I can serve the school community, build relationships with people from different backgrounds, and hopefully make a positive difference.
I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve already had to serve, and I would love to continue if I’m given the opportunity. I trust that God has placed me on this board for this season, and I want to remain faithful to that calling.
